Building Community Stewardship
Our community is rapidly growing and now, more than ever, we need your help and support to generate ideas and interest in recreation, parks, trails and open space. We know how important partnerships are, especially in a community that is growing and rapidly changing. We want to use our parks, our programs and special events to bring people together so that we don't lose our sense of community. Get in touch with Kristy if you're interested in getting involved. Email email@example.com or call 717-766-1657.
Historic Huston Mill "FRIENDS GROUP"
The Friends of Willow Mill is a non-profit organizations created by volunteers in Silver Spring Township. Their purpose and objective is to raise funds to preserve and sensitively develop the Historic Huston Mill and its environs as a community facility and to promote regional awareness and support for the Mill. The Huston Mill is located at the entrance to Willow Mill Park, situated along the Conodoguinet Creek at 80 Willow Mill Park Road in Mechanicsburg. It's easily accessible from Interstate 81, Route 114, and the Carlisle Pike.
In 2016, the Township began a phase 1 restoration project to preserve the Mill and protect as much of its history as possible. The building was in very poor condition when we began the project so there was a lot of rebuilding to do. The front exterior stairs were not part of the original Mill and were creating issues on the inside of the building. They have since been removed. The property currently has no utilities and would need connections to make it a fully functioning building. The future use of the Mill still has not been determined. The Township is working with the Friends of Willow Mill to determine the next steps. Funding will be needed to continue making improvements. Phase 1 was funded by a $270,000 contribution made through private donations to the Friends Group and $500,000 in grants from CDBG and DCED.
